I studied The Scarlet Letter in both high school and college. I also read The House of the Seven Gables (I think twice—for two different courses) in college. I enjoyed both, though I think I enjoyed The Scarlet Letter more. But I remember absolutely loving Hawthorne’s short stories in college! I’ve been eyeing his short story collection on my bookshelf for a re-read lately.
I remember enjoying his short stories as well! (Although I don’t believe I was required to read any of them for school…) Is The Scarlet Letter fairly depressing??
Yes, I remember the story being heavy just due to the nature of the themes. I’m pretty sure I was one of the few in my high school class who actually enjoyed it. I think it’s probably to your advantage to read it as an adult by your own choice rather than having to read it as a school assignment at a younger age!
